Cancer

Cancer is abnormal and uncontrolled growth of cells in human body. The cells divide at a very faster rate and even rupture to infect other tissues. They may travel in the blood stream or the lymph fluid. There are close to 100 different types of cancer. They are named after the organ they infect or originate from. Carcinoma is a cancer that begins in skin and the tissues lining internal organs. Sarcoma is cancer of the bones, cartilages, blood vessels or muscle. Leukemia is blood cancer and CNS cancer is the cancer of brain and spinal cord. Other common types of cancers are bladder cancer, breast cancer, colon and rectal cancer, endometrial cancer, renal cell cancer, lung cancer, pancreatic cancer, prostate cancer and thyroid cancer. Cancer can be detected by strange growth of body tissues, biopsy and other tests.

All forms of Cancer start at the cellular level. In a normal body, whenever there is a damaged cell, it is discarded by the body. Cancer damages the genetic composition of a cell and alters the DNA coding. Once the DNA of a cell is changed by a carcinogen, the cells do not die and such cells accumulate to form a callus of dead cells called tumor. There are 2 types of tumors

1.       Benign tumor

2.       Malignant tumor

Benign tumors can be treated by surgically treating them by removal and they do not spread over to other parts of the body. However, if benign tumor starts spreading, they are termed malignant and they also infest the neighbor organs and cells. Malignant tumors are cancerous and their spreading to other organs is termed as metastasis.

Causes of Cancer

Cancer causing agents are called carcinogens. Smoking, tobacco, inheritance, exposure to radioactive substances, exposure to UV Radiations, unsafe sex, lack of physical activity, blood transfusion and environmental factors are the major causes of different forms of cancer.

1.       Smoking is responsible for one-third of all cancer fatalities. Almost all cases of lung cancer can be associated to smoking. Smoking Is also known to cause kidney, cervical and stomach cancer.

2.       Chewing tobacco causes oral cancer. Like smoking it may also triggers cancerous activity in kidney, cervical and stomach. It is also known to cause acute myeloid leukemia.

3.       If you have a family history of cancer then it is very likely that you have inherited a mutant gene. It stays in passive mode in most of the cases and in such cases you need to be extra cautious

4.       People who work at nuclear plant bear a great risk of gene mutation and this may cause various cancers.

5.       Exposure to UV Rays from sun is known to cause skin cancer.

6.       Unsafe sex causes infection by human papillioma virus or HPV. HPV increases the risk of cervical, vulvar and vaginal cancer.

7.       Exercising regularly helps fight obesity which is known to cause prostate, colon, breast, endometrial and lung cancer.

8.       If the blood donor has any form of cancer, he greatly has the chances of transferring cancerous cells through his blood to the recipient.

9.       Environmental factors like asbestos dust, exposure to benzene, gasoline or various pollutants is also known to causes cancers.

Treatment

Cancer can be treated by the following methods:

1.       Chemotherapy includes killing of micro- organisms, mutant and cancerous cells by exposure to chemicals

2.       Radio therapy or radiation therapy is used to treat certain forms of cancer by exposing the affected area or organ to ionized radiations

3.       The affected region or organ can also be surgically removed to remove and discard the cancerous cells and preventing them from spreading further

4.       Other treatment may include angiogenesis inhibitors therapy by cutting out blood supply to tumors, biological therapy, bone marrow transplant, peripheral blood stem cell transplant, gene therapy and targeted cancer therapies

Cancer often has no specific symptoms, so it is important that people limit their risk factors and undergo appropriate cancer screening. Most cancer screening is specific to certain age groups and your primary-care doctor will know what screening to perform depending on your age. People with risk factors for cancer (for example, smokers, heavy alcohol use, high sun exposure, genetics) should be acutely aware of potential cancer symptoms and be evaluated by a physician if any develop. Consequently, individuals need to know which symptoms might point to cancer. People should not ignore a warning symptom that might lead to early diagnosis and possibly to a cure.

Symptoms of Cancer

A broad spectrum of non-specific cancer symptoms may include:

Persistent Fatigue: Fatigue is one of the most commonly experienced cancer symptoms. It is usually more common when the cancer is advanced, but still occurs in the early stages of some cancers. Anemia is commonly the culprit — a condition that is associated with many types of cancer, especially types affecting the bowel. Fatigue is a symptom of both malignant and non-malignant conditions and should be evaluated by a physician.

Unintentional Weight Loss: While it may be a welcome surprise to lose weight without trying, it can be a red flag for many illnesses, including cancer. Losing 10 pounds or more unintentionally definitely warrants a visit to the doctor. This type of weight loss can occur with or without loss of appetite. Remember, weight loss can be a symptom of cancer, but is also a symptom of many other illnesses, too.

Pain Typically, pain is not an early symptom of cancer, except in some cancer types like those that spread to the bone. Pain generally occurs when cancer spreads and begins to affect other organs and nerves.

Fever: A fever is a very non-specific symptom of many mild to severe conditions, including cancer. In relation to cancer, a fever that is persistent or one that comes and goes frequently can signal stress on the immune system. Fevers are commonly associated with types of cancer that affects the blood, like leukemia and lymphoma, but are also common in people whose cancer has spread.

Bowel Changes: If you experience constipation, diarrhea, blood in the stools, gas, thinner stools, or just a general overall change in bowel habits, see your doctor. These symptoms are most commonly associated with colon cancer, but are also related to other cancer types.

Chronic Cough: A persistent, new cough or a cough that won’t go away or becomes worse needs to be evaluated by a doctor. Blood and/or mucus may accompany the cough and can be caused many conditions. In relation to cancer, a chronic cough with blood or mucus can be symptom of lung cancer.

Keep in mind that these are very general, vague symptoms of cancer. Laura’s Cancer Diet

Many of you have emailed me asking about Laura’s cancer diet.   I believe that her diet has kept her strong and healthy and the number one reason she is still alive today.   I have probably spent about more than 30 hours researching various cancer diets for dogs and the best vitamins and supplements to include.   The following is the result of my extensive research.  This diet should work well for any type of dog cancer.

Since cancer cells thrive on the energy that carbohydrates give the body, you must include foods with fewer carbohydrates. Foods with higher fat content, contain lipids. Cancer cannot thrive in the presence of lipids; this allows more amino acids to replicate and aid in the fight against cancer. White rice, wheat and breads have extremely high amounts of carbohydrates, and should not be fed to a dog with cancer.  Cancer cells feed on sugar. We are attempting to starve those cells.

Protein is the most essential part of a cancer diet, since protein is responsible for tissue repair. Foods high in protein, like fish, beef, chicken, pork and eggs, are ideal for cancer sufferers. Not only does protein promote tissue repair, but it also aids in the prevention of cancer in dogs, since cancer cannot thrive on protein.

Below is Laura’s Cancer Diet.   I’m including links to the actual products that I give her in the event that you would like to purchase them too.   After the recipe for the diet, I will explain in detail why I choose each ingredient.   Laura is a 54 pound dog, so you will need to adjust the recipe accordingly.

Morning Meal

Detailed Explanation of Ingredients:

Ashwagandha

The herb Ashwagandha may slow and even stop the growth of cancerous cells or tumors in the canine body.  Regular use of Ashwagandha also increases hemoglobin levels. Its anti cancer, anti-inflammatory and soothing attributes can assist in providing the dog with an improved quality of life.

Astragalus

Recent research confirms the positive effect of Astragalus on immune functioning and its ability to help the body fight against illness and disease.  Astragalus may aid in restoring the function of the canine immune system. It also may prohibit the further growth of cancer cells and tumors. Astragalus is considered a supportive herb because it also enhances the effectiveness of other herbs that may be used in homeopathic treatments. Specifically, astragalus treats fatigue, high blood pressure, shortness of breath and helps the body fight colds.

Bromelain

Recent research indicates that Bromelain, an enzyme that comes from pineapples, may have an anti-cancer effect.

Chicken or Turkey

Great source of high quality protein.  I generally use the thighs, legs and breast.   I throw as much as I can in a large crock-pot and let it cook all day.  When it’s cooked, I de-bone it and chop it. Some people recommend only using skinless breasts — but for a cancer dog you want the high fat content.   Remember, a diet with a high fat content may slow tumor growth, and make the body resilient to fight tumor cells.  Leave the skin on!

Chinese Ginseng (500 mg)

Ginseng has antioxidant properties, protects against cancer formation, stimulates natural killer cell function, inhibits tumor invasion, and has antiangiogenesis properties.

Cottage Cheese and Flax seed oil

The Budwig Protocol of cottage cheese and flax seed oil found that tumors gradually receded, weakness and anemia disappeared and life energy was restored. Symptoms of cancer, liver dysfunction and diabetes were alleviated.

CoQ10
Coenzyme Q-10 is a supplement with antioxidant properties. It is a compound produced by the body and essential for the production of energy at the cellular level. Coenzyme Q-10 helps protect the heart and helps boost the immune system. . Both these benefits can be very helpful in dogs fighting any form of cancer. Some chemotherapy drugs such as doxorubicin can cause side effects such as heart toxicity in dogs, so CoQ-10 can be given as a supplement to dog cancer patients, especially those on doxorubicin. Incidentally, in humans, supplementation of CoQ-10 with other cancer treatments has been shown to improve survival times.

Echinacea

This is an herb that has long been used in Europe (and now North America) for boosting the immune system. Dogs with cancer have compromised immune systems, which can be further weakened by chemotherapy. Echinacea can be used re-establish a weakened immune system.

Essiac Tea

The blend of Essiac tea may help your dog strengthen its immune system, help the body to destroy benign growths and tumors, and strengthen muscles, organs and tissues. The formula also may remove toxic accumulation in your dogs’ body, aid in detoxification and elimination, and purify the blood while it adds strength and flexibility to bones, joints and lungs.

Garlic

Garlic stimulates immune functions in the bloodstream by increasing the activities of killer cells (cells that seek out and destroy invading microbes and cancer cells). It is therefore beneficial for dogs with suppressed immune systems and dogs fighting cancer.

A number of studies support IP6′s (inositol hexaphosphate) cancer-fighting properties. Additionally, IP6 has been shown to have potent antioxidant properties. IP6 has been shown in more than 25 studies to prevent the growth of tumors and shrink existing tumors.

L-Arginine

L-Arginine is an essential amino acid required for the normal cellular growth, metabolism and organ function. However, L-Arginine also plays a vital role in inducing cell death. L-Arginine is the common substrate for two different enzymes namely arginase and nitric oxide synthase (NOS). NOS catalyze the conversion of L-Arginine to Nitric Oxide. Arginase catalyzes the conversion of L-arginine to L-ornithine. L-ornithine is an essential component of cell proliferation whereas Nitric Oxide inhibits the proliferation of many cell types. Hence, L-Arginine can be used as a treatment option for curing certain specific types of cancers.

In a recent study conducted on dogs suffering with lymphoblastic lymphoma, researchers were able to increase survival time to a significant level by providing L-Arginine and fish oil as a dietary supplement. L-Arginine was found to lower the levels of lactic acid and insulin in the blood and also reduce the levels of cytokines that can help in the growth of cancer. L-Arginine also helps in enhancing immunity in cancer patients who have undergone chemotherapy or surgery. Certain cancer types do not require L-Arginine for their growth. Studies have shown that overloading such cancer cells with excess L-Arginine has resulted in decreased tumor growth.

L-Glutamine

L-glutamine is useful for fighting muscle wasting associated with cancer and also shows promise as an immune boosting supplement and may even be useful as an antioxidant. It is useful in this capacity to help support the dog’s immune system and help maintain body weight.

Lipiderm

A dog with cancer is building a lot of new tissue, and adequate proteins and cell membrane compounds (omega 3, 6 and 9 fatty acids) are required to do this. Lipiderm is a great source of omega 3 fatty acids.

Liver

Contains a lot of nutrients and large amounts of vitamin A and iron.  I usually use a mixture of beef and chicken.

Mackerel

Certain fatty acids called Omega 3, 6 and 9 are required in fighting cancer. Fish oil is a good source of these specific fatty acids. In a diet supplemented with fish and the amino acid arginine appears to increase survival time in dogs with cancer.  Sardines may also be substituted, but they are expensive.   Amazon has a great deal on a case of Mackerel (Roland brand).

Melatonin
Melatonin used with chemo versus chemo alone more than doubled the survival time of human cancer patients.  A study looked at over 600 cancer patients with a variety of solid-tissue tumors received melatonin.  The 1 year survival time of the group that took melatonin was more than a third greater than those that did not.

Milk Thistle

Mixed Green Vegetables

Cancer dogs need antioxidant-rich vegetables to strengthen their immune system. Choose dark green vegetables.  I use a mix of broccoli, spinach, asparagus spears, cabbage, brussel sprouts, celery, collard greens, mustard greens and bok-choy.   These are great sources of  many important vitamins and they are all very low carb.   I use a large steamer to cook them until they are mushy and then puree them in my food processor.  Make sure to puree the vegetables, since dogs do not possess the enzymes that break the layer outer cellulose layers in vegetables.  I also throw in about a teaspoon of ground up egg shells in the vegetable mixture for the calcium.

Parsley

Parsley acts like an antioxidant in that it neutralizes the negative effects of the environment by eliminating toxins and maintains the elasticity of the blood vessels. It is very beneficial for the liver, digestive system, to re-boot the immune system, reduce stress levels in the endocrine system and will benefit every area of digestion.

Reishi Mushroom

There have been over one hundred studies done in animals that yielded some fascinating results. As it turns out selenium has the ability to prevent numerous types of cancer. How important is selenium in the fight against cancer? One study found that high doses of selenium were able to stop cancer from forming by eighty to ninety percent.

Spirulina
Spirulina increases the level of white cells in the blood and of nucleated cells and DNA in the bone marrow of mice that had been subjected to chemotherapy and radiation. In dogs, the spirulina extract additionally increased the level of red blood cells. Spirulina “has chemo-protective and radio-protective capability, and may be a potential adjunct to cancer therapy. You Can ‘Catch’ Cancer

More than half of men and 30 percent of women believe you can catch cancer from someone with the disease, according to a survey commissioned by charity Cancer Research UK. But you can’t catch it like a cold, because it’s not transferred via droplets in the air. However, it is possible to pick up a virus that may lead to it. For example, the Epstein-Barr virus is thought to be linked to Hodgkin’s lymphoma (cancer of the lymphatic system) and other cancers. And the human papillomavirus causes nearly all cases of cervical cancer. Also, liver cancer is 100 times more likely in people with a chronic hepatitis B infection.

Most Heavy Smokers Will Die Of Lung Cancer

According to the British Lung Foundation, not everyone who smokes will get lung cancer. But 50 per cent of persistent smokers will eventually die from their habit, probably due to a stroke, heart attack or respiratory disease. On top of that, around 90 per cent of lung cancers are linked to smoking as are one-third of all cancers.

Electricity Pylons Cause Childhood Leukaemia

There has been lots of research into this area in the past 20 years. A study from the University of Cambridge found no evidence that magnetic fields from electricity pylons or household appliances cause childhood cancers such as leukaemia. The scientists looked at 4,000 children with leukaemia and found they’d had the same exposure to magnetic fields as healthy children.

Stress Causes Cancer

One in three people thinks a divorce or bereavement can cause cancer, says a survey by Cancer Research UK. But according to expert there’s no evidence to show that a mental or emotional state can be a trigger. “Some people think the immune system, which can be depleted by stress, plays an important role in keeping cancer at bay— but most significant studies have shown that lifestyle, genes and environmental factors count the most.

The Pill Causes Breast Cancer

A study in ‘The Lancet’ in 1996, found that the combined pill, which contains the hormones oestrogen and progesterone, slightly increases your risk of breast cancer while you’re taking it. However, this extra risk disappears 10 years after stopping. Breast cancer is still relatively rare in Pill users, and on the plus side, studies have shown that women taking the Pill for at least three years have a lower risk of ovarian cancer.

An Abnormal Smear Means You Have Cervical Cancer

Very few of the 300,000 abnormal smears taken each year in the UK, turn out to be cancer. An abnormal smear means there are some abnormal cells, but they’re not always cancer cells. Women whose smears show minor abnormalities, are asked to return for a repeat smear in six to 12 months. Most will have returned to normal. If changes persist, or are more severe, treatment nearly always gets rid of these cells before they can become cancerous

Mobile Phones Cause Brain Tumours

Most studies have shown no link between mobile phones and brain cancer — but it can’t be completely ruled out. Mobile phone use is associated with a two-and-a-half-fold increased risk of brain tumours. However, the evidence is not conclusive. The government says that while there’s no direct evidence of a health risk from using mobiles, more research is needed to prove their safety and it is currently reviewing all research on mobile phones. It has also recommended discouraging children aged under 16 from using mobile phones, except in emergencies. If you’re still worried, don’t spend long periods of time on the phone, and choose a phone with a low specific absorption rate.

Sun Cream Prevents Skin Cancer

Sun creams can help protect you from burning if you use them properly, but they won’t necessarily prevent skin cancer, so you should also limit your exposure to the sun. In fact, in 1998, a study from the European Institute of Oncology found that children wearing sun cream were more likely to stay in the sun longer, increasing their cancer risk. The Department of Health advises using a sun cream of at least SPF 15, staying out of the sun during the hottest periods of the day and wearing protective clothing.

A Breast Lump Is A Sign Of Cancer

Nine out of 10 breast lumps are benign (non-cancerous), according to Dr Eleanor Clarke of the Breast Care Campaign. “Young women are particularly susceptible to the formation of fibroadenomas — nodules of fibrous tissue, which once diagnosed can be left alone — while cysts are more common in older women,” she says. If you find a lump in your breast, see your GP and ask to be referred to a breast clinic.

Cancer Always Kills

Many people think cancer is always a terminal illness, but a lot of cancers have good survival rates and many patients can be cured. Figures from Cancer Research UK reveal that the five-year survival rate is 74 per cent for breast cancer, 80 per cent for malignant melanoma, 65 per cent for cervical cancer and 40 per cent for bowel cancer. The earlier cancer is detected, the better.

Men Are More Likely To Set Cancer Than Women

This is partly accounted for by the higher life expectancy of women, and by the increased incidence of heart disease in men. The main cancers causing death in men are lung, prostate, colon and bladder. Prostate cancer looks set to overtake lung cancer as the most common form in men by 2006. In women, the main killers are lung, breast, colon and ovarian cancers.

Meat Eaters Are More Likely To Set Cancer

The American Cancer Society says vegetarians are just as likely to die of bowel cancer as meat eaters. They are also equally likely to get breast, prostate, lung or stomach cancers. It’s eating a balanced diet, with at least five portions of fruit and vegetables a day — whether you’re a meat-eater, vegetarian or vegan — that cuts your risk of cancer.

Asbestos Is A Common Cause Of Lung Cancer

Only 10 per cent of cases of lung cancer are caused by factors such as asbestos. Other contributors include poor diet, genetic factors and exposure to radon gas — a radioactive gas found in soil, which only becomes a health hazard when it enters a home in high levels through gaps or cracks in the foundations or pipes. To check your levels, ask for a test from the environmental department of your state. In fact, according to the British Lung Foundation, 90 per cent of people newly diagnosed with lung cancer are either smokers or former smokers.
